Have you ever wanted to achieve more in your career? Head of People and Culture, Rachael Allen, shares her top tips on how to be successful in the workplace.

  1. Build relationships – it’s not just about the work you do in your company that matters, it’s the value you add to the people around you. By building and maintaining relationships with your colleagues you’re earning trust and settling yourself into the work dynamic. The more you build relationships, the more people with begin to rely on you.
  1. Develop a unique skill set – continually look to develop your skills, this will increase your job security, find something related to your role that you can become an expert in. By having a unique skill set you increase your value.
  1. Be productive – your company won’t be looking for someone who’s happy to just show up, do the job and go home. Be proactive in the work you’re doing, go the extra mile and show that you’re motivated to do more. Growth is important to any business and if you show you’re invested in personal growth, you’re more likely to be invested in the company’s growth too.
  1. Have the right attitude – BPS World has 4 values: passion, commitment, excellence and delivery. These values are shared by everyone in the organisation from the Managing Director to junior recruits. So if you’re looking for longevity in your current company, find out what it is they care about and show you care about it to.
  1. Do work that matters – it’s easy to put your head down and focus on your work, but is this the work that’s getting you noticed? By doing the work that matters, you’ll get more attention and you’ll be making a significant impact on the business and business needs.
  1. Work collaboratively – involve other people in your projects. Whether it’s a creative process or coming up with solutions to a problem, more heads are better than one.
  1. Be inquisitive – ask lots of questions to understand the ‘why’. No matter whether it’s asking why we undertake a process in a particular way or asking why about the business’ strategic direction. Understanding the ‘why’ promotes buy-in and engagement and shows that you’re interested!
  1. Build your personal brand – think about your mission statement, your values and how you are going to behave. Think about yourself as Me Plc as perception is reality.
  1. Be an expert in your area – keep up to date with what’s going on in your industry and your specialism. Knowledge is power!
  1. Your door should always be open – no matter what your level is within an organisation you should always be open to ideas, thought and questions from other.
