Our Maidenhead office recently invited college student Yasmin Salim to gain some valuable work experience as she ponders her next career move.

Following her week with us we caught up with her to find out how she found her time at BPS World.

Why did you choose BPS World for your work placement?

I chose BPS World because the company represented a good fit in line with my future ambitions and it looked like a great opportunity.

As I would like to work in Human Resources, I thought a recruitment agency would be a useful place to go and this certainly proved to be the case.

I also chose BPS World as I got a very good feeling about the environment I would be in. I felt a part of the family with everyone working together.

How did you find the process from first contact through to your first day?

I found the process very easy and useful. From the first email I sent to Simon (Conington, CEO) to communicating regularly with Natalie (Winterton, Recruitment Consultant), I was very well prepared to begin my week of work experience.

We discussed things like my hours, dress and what particular departments I wanted to spend the most time with during the week.

What was your favourite part of your work experience week?

My favourite part of the week was getting an insight into what recruitment consists of and how candidates are sourced. I particularly enjoyed being with the Business and Professional team.

However, I also enjoyed the time I spent with People and Culture as Jo Rapley gave me information and guidance about Human Resources and other possible career paths I could take.

Do you have any tips or advice for students looking for work experience in Recruitment?

My advice to other students would be to contact CEOs and managers directly, as this gives you more chance to get a response from the company.

I would also advise to ask lots of questions and take on as many tasks as possible to get as much out of work experience as you possibly can.

What did you learn from your week at BPS World and how will you apply it in the future?

During my week at BPS World, I quickly realised that there were many roles in recruitment agencies that I did not know about. This opened my eyes a bit more about the industry. I also was able to confirm to myself that this was the industry I wanted to go into in the future, as I thoroughly enjoyed the week and it lived up to my expectations.

In the future, I will already have some sort of expectation as to how recruitment agencies are run and managed, as well as the people that are needed for a business to thrive.
